Picture(s) of the Week

The wisteria are in bloom right now. Here's a shot from the Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. (located about 50 miles north of Tokyo)

This is Japan's oldest and largest wisteria, and has been cultivated by generations of gardeners. Japanese wisteria (wisteria floribunda) is a woody, flowering vine that is known as 'fuji' in Japan.

I had some wisteria climbing a fence on my property that I pruned back too aggressively one year. Last month, I caught a whiff of wisteria fragrance in that area. When I looked up into the trees, I noticed the vine was still alive, and had wrapped itself in the upper branches of an elm tree. So now I have a "wisteria tree."
